William Shakespeare

About text selection

The English text comes from the Riverside Edition of Shakespeare's works, published 1974. It is as close to the original as possible while being easier to read than the First Folio (1623), which was published seven years after Shakespeare's death. However, this is not an adapted or simplified version.

The German version were translated by August Wilhelm Schlegel and Ludwig Tieck (between 1790 and 1850). Even though numerous translations have been made since, the Schlegel/Tieck version is still unrivalled.

Usage note

It is helpful to read both versions of the play simultaneously.

To do so, you should open two individual browser windows side by side rather than opening two tabs in the same browser window. Then adjust window sizes. Unfortunately, there is no way to synchronize window scrolling.
